Join us for our next meeting on Wednesday, January 9th, 2013.
The talk
will be given by Dr. Jimmy Jiang from the National Research Council
Canada:
Wear
Materials and Characterization in Mining and Mineral Processing
Abstract:
Wear is one of the key influences
determining the useful life of many components of machinery and equipment in
mining industries. The Canadian mining industry including oil sands and mineral
mining spent about $12.6 billion for the maintenance, repair and operation in
2011, a significant proportion of which can be ascribed to wear damage. The
Mining Wear and Corrosion team at the National Research Council (NRC) has been
conducting focused researches over the past two decades or so on the evaluation
of various materials for reducing severe wear and corrosion damage and the
related high costs in mining and mineral processing. A large wear performance
database has been developed on all categories of wear materials. This talk will
discuss the most commonly encountered wear forms and mechanisms in mining and
mineral processing, including oil sands, and introduce the different techniques
used for wear characterization under different application conditions. Typical
wear data will be presented and compared.
