All future updates will now be posted on there.

Join us for our next meeting on Wednesday, February 13th, 2013!

Title: Celebrating One Hundred Years of Stainless Steel

Speaker: Gary Coates, Garcoa Metallurgical Services

2012 is the Centenary for the development of stainless steels, marking when the first patents were awarded in Germany for two stainless steel grades. The presentation will discuss the historical developments by metallurgists in France, Germany, G.B. and the U.S. that led to the commercialization of stainless steels, and then follow the early successful applications and acceptance by both consumers and industry. These will be compared to usage of stainless steels today and proposed uses in the future that bring in the element of sustainable development.

ASM BC January Meeting: Wear Materials and Characterization in Mining and Mineral Processing

Join us for our next meeting on Wednesday, January 9th, 2013.

The talk will be given by Dr. Jimmy Jiang from the National Research Council Canada:
Wear Materials and Characterization in Mining and Mineral Processing

Abstract:
Wear is one of the key influences determining the useful life of many components of machinery and equipment in mining industries. The Canadian mining industry including oil sands and mineral mining spent about $12.6 billion for the maintenance, repair and operation in 2011, a significant proportion of which can be ascribed to wear damage. The Mining Wear and Corrosion team at the National Research Council (NRC) has been conducting focused researches over the past two decades or so on the evaluation of various materials for reducing severe wear and corrosion damage and the related high costs in mining and mineral processing. A large wear performance database has been developed on all categories of wear materials. This talk will discuss the most commonly encountered wear forms and mechanisms in mining and mineral processing, including oil sands, and introduce the different techniques used for wear characterization under different application conditions. Typical wear data will be presented and compared.

Date: January 9th, 2013

Time: Happy Hour: 5 to 6:30 pm, Dinner: 6:30 to 7:30 pm, Presentation and discussion: 7:30 to 9pm

Location: River Club Restaurant and Pub, 11111 Horseshoe Way, Richmond, (604) 272-4400

Powertech Labs tour Oct 10

Join us for an exclusive tour of Powertech Labs in Surrey on the evening of Wednesday, October 10, map attached.
No safety wear is required. Pizza, veggies and beverages will be provided.
Cost is $15, no ASM membership required.
Thank you to Darren Bromley, P.Eng. and colleagues for arranging this!

You must RSVP by Monday October 8 to get in, as we need a list of attendees' names.

Tour details:

· Arrive 5:45-6:00, no entry after 6:15

· Parking in Visitor Parking at east side of building

· Meet in reception, up the stairs at the east entrance

· 6:00 to 6:20 we will eat and mingle

· 6:20 we will have opening remarks

· 6:30 we will start the tour

We will be touring Powertech’s High Voltage Lab, in which they perform testing on insulators, bushings, switchgear, circuit breakers, power cables, and many other types of high voltage equipment. Extensive capabilities provide testing with DC voltage up to 1000 kV, 60 Hz AC voltage up to 800 kV, and impulse voltage up to 3200 kV.

Powertech is an industry leader in design verification testing of hydrogen vehicle fuel systems, and provides engineering, consulting, and testing services for the electric vehicle industry. We will have a look at some high pressure hydrogen test facilities and hear about the latest innovations in electric vehicles.

Powertech’s Materials Engineering department performs mechanical testing on materials and components, and conducts failure analyses on mechanical components. On the tour, we will have a look at some of the analytical instruments, and discuss some recent projects.

Speaker: Dr. Andrew Garner (ASM Brian Ives Speaker):

Topic: Corrosion Solutions for the Pulp and Paper Industry

Abstract: Three kinds of corrosion problems will be described that have been successfully solved over the past few years. Aggressive water recycling made bleach plants more corrosive; electrochemical protection and new stainless steels were introduced to gain much better pitting resistance. Unexpected caustic cracking in carbon steel digesters required a different electrochemical solution, anodic protection as well as protective coatings. In paper mills, bigger faster machines were introduced to make much brighter paper, and older materials such as bronze and martensitic steel needed to be replaced by higher stainless grades. The critical step in solving all of these problems was to identify the fundamental corrosion mechanisms which will be outlined in this talk.

Please RSVP to Richard Buckley (buckleyrp@gmail.com) or Jessica Mager (jmager@acuren.com) before September 7th, 2012 if you are interested in attending.
